Restaurant Reviews

The Good Earth, Wells

The Good Earth is a place I frequent often, in fact whenever I am visiting Wells I end up there. Either for a bite to eat at the counter service restaurant, a quick tea and cake,
or for shopping in the wholefood shop.
The food in the restaurant is flavoursome and varied,
you can see what you are getting before you buy,
and even catch glimpses of the kitchen staff bustling away to prepare more tasty goodies.

I usually opt for the salad plate, a large bowl for a reasonable £4.95 will give you a mix of 3 or 4 yummy salads, usually including a special lentil or couscous dish.

But the menu is varied, with quiche, pizza, jacket potatoes and soup on offer, as well as the days specials, which may be lasagne or chilli.

The restaurant prides itself on its vegan and gluten free options, ensuring everyone goes away full and satisfied. I really enjoy their vegan oat based cakes, usually packed with yummy fruit inside.

They also do different homemade puddings every day. I am not a coffee drinker, but I know they provide the cheapest coffee in Wells! And even have an organic espresso blend option. They also do continental breakfast.

I like the way they serve the customers, with one person serving the food, getting the drink and taking the money per customer. It keeps it simple, fast and means the customer only deals with one person through the whole process. This ensures great customer service every time. The restaurant itself is a relaxed place to sit, with many rooms upstairs, downstairs and an outdoor courtyard to chose from. A chilled place to meet up with friends for lunch.

The Good Earth began in the 70s as a wholefood store, and there is still to this day a health food shop providing organic, local and alternative foods and products. Fresh fruit and veg, wheat and dairy alternatives, organic options of many of your favourite products, supplements and natural toiletries: you name it, you'll find it here! The products come from a wide range of suppliers, all noted for their ethical standards. Again, a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the shop, and an enjoyable shopping experience every time.

'The Potager'
is a lovely little shop to take a gander at, and to search for gifts for loved ones. From candles to skin care products from Neal's Yard, from one-off local artisan pottery and homeware to artistic cards and little gifts, you will find something for everyone.
The collections often change so keep on searching! The idea of having this shop, as well as the restaurant and wholefood store is to provide customers with an experience rather than simply a place to sit and have lunch. And the whole complex is certainly a place to linger, and keep returning to.
A few extra little things to make the place even more special: the artwork you see around the restaurant is created by local artists, and is for sale, so please ask the staff about it.
I recommend a visit to the website www.thegoodearthwells.co.uk ... not least because they share some of their most incredible recipes!
The Good Earth restaurant, Wholefood Store and 'The Potager' homestore,
located on Priory Road near the bus station in Wells.
It's a 5-10 minute walk from Wells Cathedral.

I really can't improve on any of this review, I can only reinforce every word. The energy and commitment that maintains the standards in The Good Earth is a credit to all those involved.
