They are beautiful and smiling, and around some of their necks are coils, some of the younger girls have only a few, and the older ones have very long neck coils. I know that this is&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">why many people visit this village</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">: to see the so-called 'long-neck' Kayan people. This is why mostly women are seen in the shops and talking to tourists:&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">they are the tourist attraction</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Instead of living in refugee camps, as many people do, &nbsp;the Thai government decided to create several&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">tourism villages</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, to make money from the unusual 'long necks' of the refugee women. Many families are here,&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">unable to leave</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;as they are still refugees, making a small living from tourism.<br /><strong>Inform yourself</strong>&nbsp;about the complex situation in Huay Pu Keng: please explore&nbsp;</span><a target="_blank" href="http://www.huaypukeng.com/info.htm">this website.&nbsp;</a><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Cara, the mastermind behind&nbsp;</span><a target="_blank" href="http://www.bywaysofchange.com/CloneMeta/">Ways Of Change</a><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">,&nbsp;</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">was instrumental in&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">connecting us with Huay Pu keng</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, as she</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">has</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;worked with the village for the last&nbsp;<strong>6 years</strong>. She witnessed the disconnected dynamics of the tourism here, but believed that the villagers themselves should feel comfortable to come and&nbsp;<strong>ask for her help</strong>&nbsp;before she herself can suggest any changes. She was thrilled when the village chief finally asked her for help to&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">improve the tourism,</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;as for the changes to work, all parties must be on board 100%</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Our goal is to have an&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><strong><font size="5">initial conversation event</font></strong></span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;with the people of the village, so that we can eventually discuss with them new ways of&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">mutually empowering villagers and visitors</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;alike. To begin, we organise&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">conversation games</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;to get to know each other a little, so that the&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">villagers feel comfortable</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;talking to us and getting involved.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">There are around&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">44 villagers</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;of different ages who eagerly participate, and t</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">he atmosphere is&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">jovial and relaxed</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Our wonderful translators (the villagers speak&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Kayan language</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">), are Imo and LikeYu.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">The Co-Creation team has&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">10 team members and associates&nbsp;</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">come to participate and meet the villagers, and Cara is with us (mentioned above).</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">The first game brings us all together and&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">breaks the ice</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Four of the Co-Creation team hold up flash cards with different colours printed on them, and the participants all move towards their favourite colour. This allows some&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">smiles and introductions</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, and is accompanied with lots of laughter. We do the same with pictures of animals and fruit.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&#8203;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">We then&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">split up into groups</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">: the visitor group, the 'grandparent' age villagers, 'parent' age and 'youth' age. The youths automatically split themselves into boys and girls. Maybe this shows our different way of viewing things: in this exercise the villagers saw no winners or losers, and everyone had a&nbsp;<strong>chance to share</strong>.&nbsp;<br /><br /><br /></font></div>   					 				</td>			</tr> 		</tbody> 	</table> </div></div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">&#8203;<font color="#626262">Some very&nbsp;<strong>interesting ideas</strong>&nbsp;come up during the presentations. The Co-Creative teams' list is mostly based around&nbsp;<strong>things that the grandfather does for the grandchild</strong>, such as giving gifts, going on outings and telling stories. The villagers see the role of the grandfather more like the patriarch of the society: they are&nbsp;<strong>role models for their children and grandchildren</strong>. He sets the tone of behaviour for his&nbsp;<strong>family</strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>community</strong>, and therefore for the&nbsp;<strong>nation</strong>&nbsp;as a whole. Some interesting insight from a village grandfather:&nbsp;</font><em style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font color="#626262"><strong>''We do not have money to buy our grandchildren treats or take them places. This is our opportunity to&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">talk to the villagers</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, ask our own questions and relax a little in each other's company. We then move on to the&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">second conversation</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">:</span><br /><br /><font size="5" style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><em><strong>'</strong></em><em><strong>'</strong></em></font><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><em><strong><font size="5">If you had the time and easy language ability, what would you love to talk about with visitors (or villagers)? For example: questions you would ask, knowledge you would share, advice you would give, things you would like to learn about.''&nbsp;</font></strong></em></span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-multicol"><div class="wsite-multicol-table-wrap" style="margin:0 -15px;"> 	<table class="wsite-multicol-table"> 		<tbody class="wsite-multicol-tbody"> 			<tr class="wsite-multicol-tr"> 				<td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:58.545454545455%; padding:0 15px;"> 					 						  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">&#8203;<span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Some of the villager groups may be thinking along the lines of questions they had been&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">taught to ask visitors</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">: they&nbsp;write down 'smile' and 'please the visitor'. The grandparents group write: where are you from? How was your journey?&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Are you happy with your visit here?</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;And what would you like to see while you are here? The&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">youth boys group is the most inquisitive and enthusiastic</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, wanting to know about peoples' country, religion, politics, class system, culture and language.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">The&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">parent group are interested in details</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;such as how much it costs for transportation to the village, and what kind of crops the visitor grows at home. Some of the villagers say a little more, such as the man who describes how much money he would have made in his shop that day (300 baht - around &pound;6), but he got more&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">'knowledge' and 'value'</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;out of spending time with us. And the man who said that we had come so far, and he feels that&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">we must 'love' them</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Beautiful sentiments.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Other words the participants say to describe the day are:&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">happy, wonderful, satisfied, sharing, curious and connection</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">: thoughtful words that are extremely encouraging. One man says&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">''coming back again''</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, and we all feel a sense that this is truly the&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">beginning of something big!</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">As a gift to the villagers we distribute&nbsp;a&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">'love note'</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;to each of them: a paper love heart in plastic coating. This is a&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">thank you</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;to them for participating; a&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">keep-sake</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;for them to remember us; an&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">intention</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;that we will come back again. The next time we visit they will receive another, and another, and another,&nbsp;and one day they can perhaps be used in&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">exchange for something of value</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;to them, such as transportation or an English lesson. We have a big&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">group photograph</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;taken with all participants proudly displaying their love notes</span><br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="http://www.awomanswords.com/uploads/4/0/4/8/40481171/img-7508-2.jpg?588" alt="Picture" style="width:588;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><br />&#8203;We spend around an hour looking around the village,&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">speaking to the people</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;and getting to know the place a little better. Some of us buy scarves: they take a day to make and it looks like hard work. We watch some of the&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">women working</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;on them as we are walking around. I also buy a handmade bamboo cup, a lovely souvenir. We speak to one of the elderly ladies about her neck coil. She tells us it was&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">her choice to have her neck coil</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">: she wanted to have one because it&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">preserves the Kayan culture</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. T</span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">he&nbsp;<strong>Cross-Cultural Co-Creation Association</strong>&nbsp;was masterminded by Christina Jordan, an incredibly inspiring lady, and its mission is&nbsp;<strong><em>''to host cross-cultural co-creative experiences for changemakers, conscious tourists and the communities they visit, designed to nurture new levels of human alignment around the world."</em></strong></span><br />&#8203;&#8203;<br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">When I met Hester she didn't put it quite as&nbsp;succinctly&nbsp;as that, but the idea of it thrilled me. At the time I was looking for work in&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">social development</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, but my background is in&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">tourism</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, and I have an enthusiasm for&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">anthropology</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Here is a project, landed on my lap, that spans all three of my interests and has the potential for literally&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">anything to happen</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">!&nbsp;</span><font color="#515151"><br /><br />I quickly signed up to be&nbsp;<strong>part of the team.</strong>&nbsp;The project is at its beginning stages, so this is the time for&nbsp;<strong>thinking, talking and listening</strong>. Dialogues have begun that connect current team members, Pai-based entrepreneurs and indigenous communities in the area. The idea is to open communication between these groups in order to&nbsp;<strong>work together co-creatively</strong>&nbsp;to achieve a common vision.</font><br /><br /><strong><font size="5" color="#cfa81d">The Idea...</font></strong><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">A&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">retreat</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;will be created in Pai for&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">changemakers and conscious tourists</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;from around the world to nurture their bodies, minds and souls. This nurturing will come in the form of&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">cross-cultural conversations, events and activities,</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;including visits to local indigenous communities (to inspire change in outdated tourism narratives) and yoga retreats (so our visitors return home&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">relaxed and&nbsp;rejuvenated</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">). The aim is to plant seeds in the minds of these forward-thinking people to take back to their home countries and&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">create a global dialogue</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. An online platform will help connect these people and&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">keep the conversations flowing.</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Indigenous 'hill-tribe' villages</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;will be part of an interconnected network of communities, showing each one that&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">they are not isolated</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;from the outside world. Each village will&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">decide its own involvement</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;in the project. By connecting these people with each other, with change-makers and conscious tourists, and with local people around Pai, the&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">opportunities for economic and sustainable growth are endless.</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;We could create outlets for: an alternative currency in Pai and surrounding area; organic produce grown in the villages and sold in Pai; language and culture exchanges... and so on...</span><br /><br /><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font size="5" color="#cfa81d">The Inspiration...</font></strong><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">One conversation between myself, Christina and two other team members got our creative juices flowing and showed us just how&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">transformative</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;this project could be. It's the idea of&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">conscious tourism</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. The common theme among many tourists I have come across is that they&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">WANT to be more involved with LOCAL PEOPLE</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Believe it or not, this is more important to conscious tourists than seeing the main tourist attractions. Most tourists spend more time at the main tourist attractions because&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">IT IS EASY!</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;The infrastructure is there to support them. Even if it's more expensive than doing other things in their chosen destination, tourists will pay because&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">THAT'S THE THING TO DO.</strong><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">So how about we change this narrative, so that&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">THE THING TO DO</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;is to be involved with&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">LOCAL PEOPLE</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">. Build an infrastructure to&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">MAKE IT EASY</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, and to&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">ADD VALUE</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;to travel, because the tourist gains quality experiences and knowledge of the destination. Taking home stories of people met, &nbsp;friendships formed and minds opened is much&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">more valuable than taking home some photos of a famous Buddhist statue.</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">And at the same time, the conscious tourist is thrilled that they have&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">EMPOWERED</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">&nbsp;local communities, added to&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">LOCAL sustainable economies</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">, and begun a conversation that can be taken&nbsp;</span><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">ALL OVER THE WORLD</strong><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">.
